April 11-15

April 11-
 Introduce William Shakespeare's "The Twelfth Night" Begin reading Act I



Act I

1.     How would you describe the Duke based on his behavior in this scene (Act I, scene i)?

2.     Give specific examples to support your answer in question one?

3.     What plan, involving the Captain does Viola devise?

4.     What reasons do you think Viola has for coming up with such a plan?

5.     What is your first impression of Sir Andrew and Sir Toby?

6.     Why is Sir Andrew spending time in Sir Toby’s company?

7.     Why does the Duke think Viola/Cesario will do a good job bringing his message of love to Olivia?

8.     What secret reason does Viola have for not wanting to flatter Olivia on behalf of the Duke?

9.     There are many disguises throughout the play when Viola/Cesario hints that she is in disguise to Olivia. Find one in Act I, scene v, and explain its meaning.

Act III

1.     What is the primary purpose of this scene (Act III, scene i)?

2.     Why is Sir Andrew threatening to leave Illyria?

3.     How does Sir Toby suggest that Andrew reedy the situation?

4.     Why do Sebastian and Antonio go separate ways?

5.     How does Sir Toby deceive both Sir Andrew and Viola?

6.     What happens when Antonio encounter Viola?

 Read Act IV - Character Descriptions/Appearances vs. Reality
 
 
Act IV

1.     What drives Sebastian to say, “Are all the people mad?”

2.     How does Olivia intervene?

3.     How o Maria and Sir Toby further torment Malvolio during this scene?

4.     Do you think Malvolio deserves this treatment, or has it gone to far? Explain why you think so?

5.     How does Sebastian explain his encounter with Olivia? What do they plan to do?

 Read Act V - Begin completing outline of characters and events


Act V

1.     The play resolves with three marriages. Who gets married, and which characters are left out of the happy ending?
