March 21-25

Reminder: "Exceptional Synergy" ballet Friday, March 25.  Meet in cafeteria at 5:15. Buses load at 5:30.
This week you will....

Read literature of the American Renaissance on the theme “The Realm of Darkness”
Interpret literary elements used in the literature with special emphasis on symbols and sound effects
Apply a variety of reading strategies
Respond to literature in a variety of modes
Learn and use new words
Read and interpret the story
Identify and analyze atmosphere and connotations
Read and Interpret the story
Interpret symbols
Draw inferences
Understand archaisms


March 21 - 


Discuss elements of Gothic Literature ( see Handout on Blog)  Identify elements in movies or stories  you have seen or read. How does it effect the mood  or create suspense?

As a class: choose a movie/story/show and find evidence of the elements of Gothic  literature.

Read together Horacio Quiroga’s “The Feather Pillow” p 726-731 (Holt Am. Lit. Text)

Bring story up on SB and have students identify components that qualify this short story as Gothic.

Discuss the use of vocabulary like “swallowed” how does this contribute to the mood of the selection.

 
 March 22

Read “The Ministers Black Veil” By Nathaniel Hawthorn
P299-307 (Holt Am. Lit. Text)
Complete Graphic organizer for selection
Vocabulary for Selection
Handout of short answer analysis of selection and vocabulary
Identify and give examples of Gothic elements found in the selection.

March 23
Read Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment and Complete “Lab Report” based on information from the story.
(Story and Handout in margin of blog) 

March 24
Read “Hop Frog” by Edgar Allen Poe – Identify the gothic elements of the piece. How do they contribute to the atmosphere of the story. 

This story can be found on my blog as well as a literary analysis for further discussion.

Literary Response DUE FRIDAY March 25
Choose one of the stories we have read this week and write a literary response. Be sure to follow the format and outline of the literary response and include the literary element and examples from the text. (You may find the literary response example on my blog)

March 25 
Watch Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Black Cat”  Using the handout identify the elements of gothic literature found in the video. Are these elements effectively used ? Why or why not?
