Discuss elements of Gothic Literature ( see Handout on Blog) Identify elements in movies or stories you have seen or read. How does it effect the mood or create suspense?
As a class: choose a movie/story/show and find evidence of the elements of Gothic literature.
Read together Horacio Quiroga’s “The Feather Pillow” p 726-731 (Holt Am. Lit. Text)
Bring story up on SB and have students identify components that qualify this short story as Gothic.
Discuss the use of vocabulary like “swallowed” how does this contribute to the mood of the selection.

Watch Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Black Cat” Using the handout identify the elements of gothic literature found in the video. Are these elements effectively used ? Why or why not?
